July Wrap-up
New On the Page
We've (OK, it was Chris . . . he has nothing to do but play with the page) changed the way some of our key pages are designed, so that now, even though we use frames, you can link (bookmark) directly to major sections and not have a problem navigating. Through a cool JavaScript that Chris found and tweaked, you can now point your browser directly to the gear or trips page, for example, and the site will dynamically build the frameset for you, complete with navigation bar. Cool, huh? When we have time, we'll eventually work this into all of our pages. But, we still encourage you to check out the opening page periodically, just to check the ticker to see what's new.
New in the Sections
Gear:
Our latest reviews were posted around 7/15. They include the PUR Scout water filter, the Peak1 Orion two-person, three-season tent; The North Face Pamir fleece gloves; and TOPO! Mapping software. Check them out at http://www.hike-nh.com/gear/
Trips:
We posted the review of our dayhike on Mts. Jackson and Webster from June 26, 1999. We finally got the review up around July 7, 1999. Check it out at http://www.hike-nh.com/trips/
Miscellaneous:
Our newest sermon from our soapbox, entitled "Why Washington" is now on-line. We ask this question of you because it is so frequently asked of us. Everyone wants to hike Mt. Washington, yet we aren't sure it's worth it. Read our view at http://www.hike-nh.com/trips/whywashington.shtml. You can also access this link from the bottom of the trips page at http://www.hike-nh.com/trips/. After you've read it, let us know what you think by responding through the link at the bottom of the page. We may even post a few of the responses.
Coming Soon
We will soon be posting a report of our latest trip, another thigh-burning dayhike that bags two 4000 footers in one day. Come along with us as we hike Mts. Flume and Liberty on a scorching 90 degree July day. The pictures are developed and the writing has begun, so the review is just around the corner. Our working title so far is, "The Never-ending Mountain."
Other Events
Provided everything works out, and the openings are not all filled, Chris and Rob (along with Martina and Pamela) will be participating in "Peak Hike, Mt. Washington '99" on Sunday, September 12. The hike is a one day, challenging hike of Mt. Washington to raise money to fight breast cancer. It is sponsored by The Breast Cancer Fund, in collaboration with The New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition. The sign-up fee is $25 (tax deductible) until 8/16/99, then $35 after that. Registrations are limited to 300 people, and teams of up to 10 people are encouraged to sign up. We are still in the planning stages, but we may be forming a hike-nh team, and may be looking for volunteers to join us. Even if we don't form the team, we'll be there and we hope you are too.
For information, try http://www.breastcancerfund.org. Participants are asked to commit to raising $100 in pledges. The hike is sponsored by many great companies, including JanSport, Nalgene, Teva, Hi-Tec, Leki, Adventure Medical Kits, and The North Face.
After we work out some last minute details, we'll put more info on the page.
That's it for now. Thank you for joining our mailing list. We'll see you on the trail.
